FS → File System (文件系统 in Chinese)

Drive Letter → (盘符 in Chinese)

Mounting is an important notion that provides a way for OS to access devices with different FSs in a consistent way.

Windows long-term uses a method of mounting called

“mount drives” as Drive Letter (you can manually assign one via cmd tool Diskpart). Every regular user access disk via paths based on Drive Letter, e.g. C:\\Users\\me\\Downloads\\

But in Linux, there’s no drive letter and you may often see paths like /home/me/Downloads/ .

But in fact that’s almost the same as mounting devices in Linux. Drive Letter is just heritage from DOS.

Mount in Folder

Since Windows 10, mount to directory is supported, which UNIX always supports.
